“Sunflower” by Emilia Vaughn
“I wrote my song Sunflower when I was fourteen years old on a rainy day at home. I had no previous idea or thought about what I intended “Sunflower” to be about. I created the indy style chords in front of me on this rainy day, but with a warm fuzzy feeling inside, which altogether influenced me to create the song around the subject of a Sunflower: something bright even during rain. I started writing what I saw outside my window, and how I felt as I pondered over the verses. In my mind, I was envisioning this picture perfect guy to be my “Sunflower.” By that I mean, someone who could share the same sunny vibrant feelings I do, even on rainy days. Sunflower was the first song where I allowed myself to open my imagination lyrically. Most songs I had heard on the radio were developed around themes of love, sex, money, etc., so I decided to challenge myself as an innovator and spend my time using the smaller, but just as important, objects and experiences to reflect and write about in my song. Sunflower was so effortless and easy to write because I just wrote how I felt and how I saw the world. Since I wrote Sunflower, I continue using the technique of challenging myself innovatively to find the perfect sound and write unforgettable lyrics.” - Emilia Vaughn
